Giving Feedback (Strategies)

Image
Receiving feedback that will help your character improve is very important. Receiving praise and glory is exciting, but if all we get is praise, then we have nothing to use to improve. I personally seek constructive feedback because it will motivate me to be "perfect" and not need feedback anymore, if that makes sense. The article "The Difference Between Praise and Feedback"  by Anya Kamenetz highlights the fact that adults tell children to "try their best" and then they receive praise for doing their best rather than receiving feedback that could potentially help them in the future. For kids, they do not want to shamed for not being perfect, but constructive feedback spun into a positive statement could be beneficial to their developing character. Language is so important in any culture and consistent/constant praise only teaches children and young adults to have a fixed mindset. The process of constructive feedback will develop the young minds into a gr

Week 3 Story: Twin Wars

Image
One beautiful day in the Land of Duplication, a young mother gave birth to two gorgeous twin baby girls, Mary and Marlie. The twins were identical so everything about them was the exact same. As the sweet girls grew up, nothing changed; they dressed the exact same, they finished each other's sentences, and they exclusively played together. They even had the twin powers that when one twin is sad or hurt, the other twin feels the emotional pull.  As years passed and the girls got older, something changed... their similarities declined and their mother's attention shifted... The mother seemed to focus more on just one of the girls, specifically Marlie, and left the other, Mary, feeling lonely and unwanted.  The loneliness of Mary escalated to isolation while Marlie thrived with success in friendships, schoolwork, and community activities. Venus grew envious and enraged with the treatment she received from everyone, even her own family. She constantly wondered, "ho

Tech Tip: Word Count Tool

Image
In order to make sure I reached the work count for each assignment, I would copy and pasted my passages into a Word document. It did not take a lot of effort, but it was unnecessary. I downloaded the extension of the word count into my browser and it has made everything so much easier. This tip is a handy little one. I am gonna start using it for a lot of things when I am not using Word. It really is true that you can learn a new thing everyday, I really like the the tech tips and cannot wait to see what else I can pick up on as the semester goes on. I hope I can share tech tips to friends as I learn about them. Tech Tips Meme from MacQuarie University

Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche, Part B

Image
After reading Venus and the Goddesses from the Cupid and Psyche unit, I was shocked to see how things changed. Venus used her son, Cupid, to revenge her and torment her enemy, Psyche. The biggest twist that happened was..... Cupid fell in love with Psyche. Never thought I would see that coming. Venus, of course, was furious and felt betrayed by her son. But whose fault is this whole mess? It is VENUS'!! She is the one that dragged Cupid into her devious plan. In this story, Venus complains and complains. She talks about conceiving another son to and stripping Cupid of his wings and bow and arrow. Being a mother, she is not acting like a good one at all. She is not there to talk to her son about his first love, she is shaming him for loving the girl she hates. She also calls upon her friends, Ceres and Juno, to help her find and destroy Psyche for poisoning her son. The next story, Psyche's Prayer, is about Psyche trying to survive. She knows that Venus is after her in a

Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche, Part A

Image
The story Psyche's Beauty and the Anger of Venus grabbed my attention by the way the story was told. The main character Venus is furious because this young, beautiful girl is being compared to her. The people say that the young girl is so beautiful that she looks just like Venus, but Venus takes offense because all the people worship this girl and admire her beauty and nobody gives Venus the time of day. Venus is jealous because she is not getting half the attention that the young girl, Psyche, is receiving. What caught my attention in the book is that Cupid, Venus' son, the God of Desire, was using his power of attraction for "evil." Venus is so envious of Psyche that she calls on her son to revenge her and seize her with passion for a "wretched man." I always thought that Cupid made people fall in love for the good of both parties--not use his powers for revenge and wrongful lust. The big twist that popped out to me was Cupid being somewhat evil--I was

Feedback Thoughts

Image
The article Why It’s So Hard to Hear Negative Feedback  dives into the fact that most people can feel negative feedback approaching and then take it in a paralyzing manner instead of transforming the energy into a motivational mechanism. It was stated that people avoid delivering and receiving negative feedback because they're avoiding what would make them better at work and life. The article really focuses on helping the readers understand that giving and receiving negative feedback is a way to grow as a person, not something that needs to be feared. Speaking from my point of view--I might be biased towards myself--but I feel like I take negative feedback in a paralyzing manner, but I eventually take that anxiety and turn it into something useful. I do like constructive criticism because it only helps me build on the progress that I have already made, whether that is at work, school, or just life advice. I have always believed that I was a perfectionist and the article 6 Hidden

Story Topic Brainstorm

Image
In the third grade, I did this video project about the Greek Gods and Goddesses and I really enjoyed putting it together. I invested a lot of my interest in the topic into the project itself. I want to use stories about the Greek Gods and Goddesses when creating my story book. On one of my earlier blog posts, a comment was made about substituting football players for Gods and cheerleaders for Goddesses and I think that is a great idea. That idea would modernize the stories. There are many stories I would like to use, but Aphrodite and the Trojan War is one them. I know that Aphrodite is the Goddess of Love and Beauty and I know that the Trojan War was a very significant event in Greek Mythology. I want to retell the story in a way that all OU students will enjoy because it uses "icons" of the university as the characters.     Aphrodite , the Greek Goddess of Love and  Beauty  Another storybook idea that I found interesting was rewriting the popular fairy tales wit

Week 2 Story: The Lion and the Maiden

Image
The Lion and the Maiden In a far away land, a young girl and her older brother lived in a town just outside a large city. The youth's parents visited the city often and one day, a tragic accident occurred and just like that, the young children lost their parents.  The brother, Jacob, took care of his younger sister, Allison, the best he could. Jacob was now the man of the house and the provider for the family. Because of the accident, Jacob and Allison were too scared to go to the city, so they decided that a dark trench to a neighboring town was the better route to use to get supplies.  One day, Jacob wanted to surprise Allison with her favorite toy from the market in the next town over. Jacob said, "I am going to go visit our distant cousin, but I will be back this evening. Please stay with the neighbors and do not go far." Allison did as she was told. Jacob took the long, dark trench all the way to the next town. He got there and the toy was unavailabl

Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

Image
The story The Beauty and the Basilisk : The Three Roses  grabbed my attention because it was a spin off of  The Beauty and the Beast . The story was easy to follow especially if you know the story of The Beauty and the Beast.  In the story there was a mother, three daughters, and a basilisk. There were a few settings, the town (not mentioned that much), the market (not mentioned much), and the palace (most important). The mother is important because she made the decision to pay her debt with her child. The daughter is important because she actually went to the palace as payment to save her mother. The basilisk is important because he demanded the payment and gave all the orders. The other two daughters were not important--just needy. The three roses were the significant objects that put the daughters fate in the basilisk's hands. The beheading of the basilisk was the significant change in the story; that act(s) was how he transformed into the handsome youth. I do not under

Time Strategy

Image
I like to think that I am really good at managing my time and never procrastinate... but let's be honest, there are times when everyone gets behind. My schedule does not seem to overwhelming... yet, but I plan to stick to the schedule that was suggested to me. I do love to get ahead so I do not have to worry about procrastination so I love that the class is already open and ready to be worked on. I have tried to use a planner before, but I do not like to write down every single thing, so I switched to a desk calendar which has been really helpful for writing down important due dates and test days. Being a student athlete, I have to triple check my schedule to make sure I have all my school responsibilities done and my athletic responsibilities done. In turn, being busy has somewhat benefited my time management. "Checked" To-do list from Web Template The article 3 Steps to Recapture Time  was insightful and created "rules" to help others manage their

Technology

Image
Like I have said before, blogging is very new to me and there are so many technologies and websites that go into these assignments. I tend to keep up with technology pretty well and I am a fast learner, so I hope I can pick up on everything quickly. However, the many things that we will use for this class is overwhelming. I hope that once a steady routine is made, the blogging and creating will be much easier. I am not very familiar with the websites that were mentioned, so my first impression of the technology is a bit nerve-racking. Spongebob Biting Nails Gif

Intro. to Assignments

Image
Since this whole blogging thing is very new to me, the assignments seem somewhat overwhelming. I know for a fact that I will be able to do them, but getting used to the set up will be the difficult part. I have already learned a lot about blogging and this class, and all the detailed instructions are very helpful. There are numerous extra credit opportunities and I plan to take advantage of those to help me feel secure in this class. The growth mindset topic stands out to me because everyone works and learns in their own way, and I think it would be cool to research the different mindsets and see the statistics behind people's mindsets.  The storytelling/storybook project will probably be the hardest project for me, personally. I am 100% a perfectionist and so I will want to get my story just right. I hope I can create an easy to follow and fun story for everyone to read. Blogging meme from The Daily Moss

Growth Mindset

Image
Carol Dweck states that most students have a fixed mindset and only believe that they have a certain amount of knowledge that they possess. However, a growth mindset is the belief that intelligence can be developed as students grow and gain more access to knowledge. I just learned about growth mindset today, but I do believe that a spectrum of intelligence can be broadened. It all depends on the motivation of the student, though. I personally care about my grades so much that I probably put too much pressure on myself, but because I work so hard, I learn a lot and my grades show that. If students organize their study habits, and study in general, I think that a growth mindset would be less rare. In my head, the topic of mindset taps into the study of the brain and I find that very interesting because each person's brain works differently and is unique. With that being said, I think learning more about mindsets would spark my interest. Since I am a science major, I have always b

Introduction to the Future Doctor

Image
Hello and welcome to my blog. This is all very new to me, but I think I am figuring everything out. I am a third year undergraduate student at the university and I am majoring in Biology. I am definitely one of those people that find school enjoyable, to some extent, and math and science are my favorite subjects. I like that I get to explore all the different science classes that college has to offer and I hope that I do well enough in school to pursue my goal of becoming a doctor. Both my parents are involved in "healing" because they are physical therapists. My parents love their job and helping others is what they love most about it. Growing up, I always wanted to help others just like them, so I wanted to be in the field of medicine and healing whether that is being a doctor, therapist, etc. Female Doctor at Eldorado. Storybook Favorites

Image
As a kid, I loved Disney movies and stories; the storybook  Aladdin's Adventures  grabbed my attention because it reminded me of my childhood. The title of the story peaked my interest and after reading the introduction, I was compelled to keep reading. The introduction did a good job of explaining how the story was set up without giving away any major details. Almost everyone knows the real story of Aladdin, but the introduction to the storybook explained that this particular story was going to be similar to the true story, but details would be adjusted. The story still had genies, Aladdin, and a  magic lamp , but the way the story is told is different. I explored the page and I really liked how each story had a different link and that they were separated. The separation created a "need" to read more. The "author's note" at the bottom of each story also clarified the changes between the true story and the created story. The clarification was a great idea an

My Favorite Place

Image
There are many places that I love to visit and there are many places that I would love to visit in the future. I have never been out of the country but I would really enjoy a travel experience. Europe is the first place that comes to mind and I hope I can travel abroad one of these days.             I have not had the opportunity to travel a lot, so I could not think of a specific place that is my favorite. However, I do know that I love OU football. I am a cheerleader at the university and game days make Saturdays my favorite days of the week. I get chills every time the band starts playing and the pregame videos begin. The games can be long and hot, but I always get excited to cheer a game. Being inside the stadium, with the fans yelling and cheering, is easily one of the best feelings ever. I love that I can be apart of the game day experience and I hope many others enjoy it as much as I do. The OU football stadium is a special place, especially to the university's stu
