Introduction to the Future Doctor

Hello and welcome to my blog. This is all very new to me, but I think I am figuring everything out. I am a third year undergraduate student at the university and I am majoring in Biology. I am definitely one of those people that find school enjoyable, to some extent, and math and science are my favorite subjects. I like that I get to explore all the different science classes that college has to offer and I hope that I do well enough in school to pursue my goal of becoming a doctor. Both my parents are involved in "healing" because they are physical therapists. My parents love their job and helping others is what they love most about it. Growing up, I always wanted to help others just like them, so I wanted to be in the field of medicine and healing whether that is being a doctor, therapist, etc.

I am from Oklahoma and have lived here my whole life. Many people say Oklahoma is boring and small, but I love the size because the cities are not too small and not too big either. I grew up with two siblings and two dogs. My siblings and I have gotten very close as we have grown up (we fought all the time when we were little as anyone could imagine). I have two small dogs that bark ALL the time. No matter how many times we cuddle them and shhh them, they bark at any noise they hear. My family loves sports just as much as I do. My parents have OU football season tickets and come to every single game. My dad is an Oklahoma State fan, but my whole family, as you can see below, reps the red and white and we are slowly transforming him into a Sooner. Each member of my family is always very busy with independent responsibilities, but we always find time at some point to come together and enjoy each other's company.

  1. I am always so excited when there are people going into the health professions in this class, Caitlin: math and science are a part of medicine, but so is storytelling! So I hope this class will be a way for you to gain some skills that will turn out useful in your professional future, along with all the biology you are learning. And, of course, all the animal life and plant life too that will be the heroes and heroines of the myths and folktales are definitely different than the animals and plants as seen in the biological sciences. Maybe you can write a story in which you imagine just what it is your dogs keep barking about, ha ha. Anyway, I hope you will have fun with all of that... and with the football season too! :-)

  2. Hi Caitlin!

I am a Biology major as well! My goal is to become a Physician Assistant. This is my first time blogging too, and I can find it overwhelming sometimes. Once I got the hang of it, blogging has become so much easier! To this day, I have never had pets. I have always wondered what life would be like with pets! Your experience shed some light on this! I loved reading your post!

  3. Hi Caitlin!

This is also my first time blogging, but it looks like you are getting in the hang of things! I also really enjoy school. I think I enjoy it so much because of the schedules and time commitments, I feel very productive throughout the weeks. I also love to use my planner, so that is another reason why I find school enjoyable. I am from Tulsa, OK and absolutely love it; people say that Tulsa is too small, but I disagree. I think any of the towns in Oklahoma, like you said, are the perfect size for any family.

  4. Hi Caitlin!

I really admire you going into the medial field! I know that is a super challenging major, but it is also super rewarding. Like you've seen with your parents and the physical therapy profession that they love. That's ironic you have a kind of house divided situation going on, I have the same thing! My youngest sister just started school at UT(this year's Red River game should be interesting) and she's trying to turn my family into wearing that burnt orange. I hope you have a good semester!

  5. Hi Caitlin,

That is really awesome that you have your parents to look up to and push you towards your goals of becoming a doctor. I always love to hear about families who everyone has worked in the health field and their kids are wanting to do the same. It is truly inspiring when you have someone in your life who loves their job and makes you want to be that happy in yours one day. I love that your family has season tickets but your dad is still an OK State fan, those are always the best rivalries. I am from Texas and a good majority of my friends went to UT Texas and I think going to those games are more fun than others.

  6. Hi Caitlin! I really enjoyed getting to learn a little bit more about you and admire your passion for pursuing a career in the health field! That is really cool that your parents are both physical therapists, as that is the current career that I am pursuing! Do you think that their involvement in the health field has inspired you to want to be a doctor? Also, I love your perspective on Oklahoma! I often fine myself having to defend this place from people from other states. Although it's small and seems to have little to offer, there are several big cities with a lot to do, not to mention that there is nothing like Oklahoma football!

  7. Hi Caitlin!

Thank you for sharing! I think it's awesome that you have such a strong passion for helping others and that your parents have had such a strong influence on what you want to pursue as a career! I am also wanting to be in the health field and and planning on going to physical therapy school after graduation! I really appreciate your thoughts about Oklahoma as a state and completely agree with you that Oklahoma is the perfect size. Boomer!!

  8. Hi Caitlin!!

It's great to see another member of OU spirit in this class! Like you, I have always loved Oklahoma and would not be disappointed if I lived and died right here in Norman, Oklahoma. It's awesome that you are pursuing a bachelors in biology. I know that can't be easy, especially paired with your commitment to OU spirit. I'm an engineering major and I don't think I could ever be involved with biology. I think it is so hard, and the fact that you love it blows my mind! I hope you achieve everything you set after and we'll see you next game day! Boomer!

  9. Hi Caitlin!

I'm always impressed by people who excel at and enjoy math/science, and it sounds like you're on a great track towards going into the field of medicine! I'm also from Oklahoma and relate to enjoying the size of the state haha. It's awesome that your dad comes to so many games as an OSU fan, I know you'll convert him to Crimson eventually!

  10. Hi Caitlin! I saw your comment on my wall and I wanted to reply to you! I graduated from Classen in 2015 and I was a piano major taking IB courses! I actually know your sister Casady and your dad! Haha your dad our cross country coach for a brief moment and I met your sister on the swim team! Anyways, that's really cool that you are pursuing medicine! Good luck and have fun with this blog!

  11. Hi Caitilin!
I think it is so cool that you are studying Biology want to become a doctor and help people. It is so cool that you are following your parents’ footsteps into the medical field (even if your dad is an OSU fan, as long as he is not a UT fan). I enjoyed reading about your family and your collective passion for sports. Good luck with this semester!

  12. Hi Caitlin,

I couldn’t agree more about Oklahoma — I’m from out of state but have grown pretty fond of the place, and what you say about size is a big part of that.

Do you know if you want to be a physical therapist as well, or do you have your eye more set on some other part of the medical world?

    Best,
    A.M.

  13. Hi Caitlin!
Even though it has been a couple of weeks already, I also am still getting used to this unique course. I also, have hopes of going to medical school to become a physician, and that is so motivating and special that you have two parents with the same passion as you. I agree with you about Oklahoma. I was born and raised here, and even though it seems small sometimes, the people are so nice, and I know if I move away, I will happily take my kids back to my favorite spots to share my favorite memories.

  14. Hi Caitlin! It's great that you want to help others like your parents have done. I want to be a nurse so I understand that feeling. I also have a small dog and I have just accepted that they bark. At least they are probably doing it out of love! They just want to protect you in some capacity haha. I look forward to reading your stories!

  15. Hey Caitlan!
I think that is so cool that you are majoring in Biology. I know that for me it is hard to comprehend science at all so I think it is neat that you can. I too grew up in Oklahoma and have lived here my whole life! I grew up in Tulsa and liked it because it was so spread out that traffic was never that bad and there is so much to see and explore. That is funny that your dad is an OSU fan. My dad actually went to OSU undergrad, then OU grad, then SMU for a doctorate so he reps all the teams but he loves OU. I hope your year goes well and you do great!

  16. Hey Caitlin! I enjoyed reading your introduction post, especially the part about your dogs! I have a boxer back home that I miss a lot, but she's not nearly as energetic as yours are. I always liked math in high school, but I was never a big science guy. I guess that's why I'm not going to be in medicine anytime soon...

Let me know what I have to do to get your dad in some crimson and cream! Hopefully I run into more of your posts down the road.

  17. Hi Caitlin!

I too want to be a doctor. I want to work in the medical field because it is service oriented and I love humanitarian work! I can relate to how you were inspired to become a doctor by your parents. My mother is a psychiatrist and went to OU for both undergrad and medical school. When I was little, I always admired how selfless she was and thought it was so cool how she could use her knowledge of science to help others. To this day, I still feel as if my mother is one of my biggest inspirations! Good luck this year!

  18. Hi Caitlin!

Kudos to you for being a Biology major! I started off freshman year being a Biology major as well, but realized by the end of it that Biology was not meant for me. However, the irony is that I do prefer Biology classes over Chemistry classes all day, any day. I think it's awesome that you want to be a doctor! I especially like that your parents are already in the health field and that has helped you realize your passion in life. Good luck this semester! I look forward to reading more stories from you!

  19. Hey Caitlin,

It's nice to see someone else that has a dog that won't hush no matter how hard you try. My dog will bark at anything and anyone. I'm positive he's convinced that he rules the world. I also relate to arguing with my sibling a whole bunch when I was younger. Thankfully, we get along now just like you and your siblings. Good luck and I hope to stumble across more of your stories!

  20. Hi Caitlin! It's always nice to meet (although indirectly in this case) a fellow pre-med who wants to help others! I grew up in Houston, so OK city is WAY better in traffic. I think people who don't appreciate Oklahoma city sizes want more action but don't realize that comes with traffic and parking issues. I know the joys of noisy dogs. We love them, but they don't understand that they do not have a monopoly on their environment. Nice reading your introduction!
